Do I Really Need a Website for My Small Business?

By Quentin | QWeb Studio | April 2026  ·  7 min read

It's a question I hear often, usually followed by one of these: "My Facebook page gets plenty of engagement." Or: "I get all my work through word of mouth." Or: "I've been in business for 15 years without one."

These are all valid points — and they don't change the answer. Yes, you need a website. Here's why.

41%

of Australian small businesses still don't have a website — and research shows they're losing customers to competitors who do.

Let's Address "My Facebook Page Is Enough" First

Facebook is a great tool. I'm not here to tell you to stop using it. But there are several critical things a Facebook page cannot do that a website can:

Five Reasons You Need a Website Right Now

1. Credibility — People Google You Before They Call

This is the big one. Before a potential customer calls you, books with you, or walks through your door, they Google you. Every single time. What do they find? If there's no website, some people will move on to a competitor who does have one — even if your competitor is objectively less good at the job.

A website isn't just a digital brochure. It's your first impression. It signals: this business is real, professional, and worth trusting. Without one, you're leaving that judgement to chance.

2. Google Finds Your Customers for You

Word of mouth is powerful, but it has a ceiling. There are only so many people in your existing network. A website lets strangers find you — people actively searching for exactly what you offer, right now, with their wallet open.

A plumber with a well-built website ranks for "plumber near me" in their suburb. A café with a good website shows up when tourists ask Google "best coffee near [suburb]". That's free, ongoing, 24/7 marketing that works while you sleep.

3. You Own Your Platform

Facebook, Instagram, Google Business Profile — these are all platforms you borrow, not own. Their rules change constantly. Organic reach on Facebook has declined dramatically over the past decade. Instagram changed its algorithm and many businesses saw their engagement drop overnight.

Your website is yours. Your domain, your content, your email list — these are assets that cannot be algorithmically taken from you. Building your online presence on rented land is a risk. A website gives you a foundation you actually own.

4. A Website Works 24 Hours a Day, 7 Days a Week

You can't answer calls at 11pm on a Sunday. Your website can. A good website answers questions, showcases your work, explains your pricing, and lets customers book or enquire — all without you lifting a finger. That's a salesperson who never sleeps, never takes holidays, and never needs to be paid.

Many of the enquiries we see our clients receive come outside business hours. Someone is lying in bed on a Sunday night, thinking about getting their bathroom renovated, and they find your site. They send an enquiry. Monday morning, you have a new lead. That doesn't happen without a website.

5. Your Professional Image

Think about the last time you needed a tradesperson or a specialist you'd never used before. Did you judge them even slightly by how professional they seemed? Did you look them up online? Did you feel more confident after seeing a professional website with photos of their work, a clear list of services, and genuine reviews?

Your customers do the same thing. A well-designed website doesn't just tell people what you do — it tells them that you care about quality, that you're established, and that you're worth the investment. In competitive markets, that perception can be the difference between getting the job and losing it to someone who charges more but looks more professional.

What About Word of Mouth?

Word of mouth is brilliant. If you're getting consistent referrals from happy clients, you're doing something right. But here's what people often miss: word of mouth and a website aren't competing strategies. They work together.

When someone recommends you to a friend, what does that friend do? They Google you. They visit your website. They check your reviews. The website validates the recommendation. Without it, you're relying entirely on the trust of one person rather than letting your work speak for itself.

A good website also amplifies word of mouth. Happy clients can share your website link. A direct URL is much easier to share and looks far more professional than "just search for them on Facebook, I think."

But I've Survived 15 Years Without One

Yes — and that's a credit to your skills and your reputation. But survival isn't the same as thriving. And the market has shifted.

In 2010, not having a website was common and mostly fine. In 2026, it's increasingly a disadvantage. Search engines have become the default way people find local businesses. AI assistants are accelerating this further. The businesses that have a strong digital presence are capturing customers that never would have found them through traditional word of mouth.

You've built 15 years of good reputation. A website gives that reputation an online home — and lets it reach people who don't already know you.
